I have been working on some new techniques. The last post of my work I showed some drawings that I had been working on using different types of inks and application techniques. I incorporated that into quilting. The first image is of a quilt made of cotton papers, it is hand sewn and has cotton batting in between the layers of paper.
These next few images are of a series I am now getting into which is the same “ink” process but on fabric. I have been working on ways to achieve the same outcome as the paper paintings/drawings.
machine embroidered on printed cotton
the next is on raw silk. (in progress-front)
and the reverse side (in progress)
I have several more hours of embroidery left and I need to think more about display issues. but I would love to hear some feedback. I will be working on other harbingers of disease in the coming weeks.
I really wish that every one could the level of detail that these have. They are just incredible. I really like the idea that you’re working with – the harbingers of disease. I think that it’s a good progression from your previous disease quilts. Not only that, but I think that the images are more accessible to the general audience rather than the blown-up microscope images.
I’m curious to see what you’ll do for display too!
I’m so glad to see the new work! These look great! My favorite part is the way the dye works on the raw silk- you’re starting to achieve as similar feel to the paper. I know you’re not finished with the 2nd one, but I’m interested to know what the whole piece looks like (not cropped). It seems like it needs to have more of a presence, maybe more of a form, even stretched or mounted. . . not loose and breezy and bendy which is what fabric (especially raw silk) naturally does. I hope your quarter finishes up well!!!
